The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties has identified communication, psychomotor skills, and cognitive decision-making as core competencies for all nurse practitioners. Faculty leaders of the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Program at the University of Texas at El Paso were tasked with developing innovative assignments to help FNP students meet core competencies. This article discusses the challenges and successes of creating and implementing best-practice simulation events for FNP students to help students practice these core competencies, utilizing standardized patients, and maintaining the psychological safety of all participants. Findings from each event are utilized to help improve or refine future events.

Nursing Students' Reports of Patient Safety Incidents and Reasons During Clinical Placements: A Secondary Analysis of the International Data.

Clinical placements expose nursing students to patient safety incidents and provide important opportunities for learning about safe care. This study explored how nursing students in four countries recognized and interpreted patient safety incidents encountered or witnessed during clinical practice, including perceived contributing factors. A secondary qualitative content analysis was conducted using narrative data from 1442 undergradua…

Bridging the Awareness-Action Gap in Disaster Preparedness: A Qualitative Study of Immersive Virtual Reality Learning Among Nursing Students.

BACKGROUND: Disasters increasingly challenge healthcare systems, highlighting the need to strengthen preparedness among future healthcare professionals. Although disaster risk awareness is important, it does not consistently translate into preparedness behaviours, reflecting the awareness-action gap. Immersive virtual reality (VR) may enhance experiential disaster learning, but how it influences preparedness processes remains insuffici…

Evaluation of the Bridge-in, Objective, Preassessment, Participatory Learning, Postassessment, and Summary-Based Instructional Model in Disaster Nursing: Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: The undergraduate stage is critical for developing nursing students' disaster nursing competencies; however, traditional lecture-based teaching often fails to promote active learning, and innovative instructional models remain underused in this field. The BOPPPS (Bridge-in, Objective, Preassessment, Participatory Learning, Postassessment, and Summary) model is a student-centered, closed-loop instructional framework that emp…
