PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Weight loss is recommended for obesity management, but it also increases bone turnover and reduces bone mineral density (BMD) and bone quality (microarchitecture, geometry, and strength). This review examines mechanisms and the multiple factors that influence skeletal responses to caloric restriction. RECENT FINDINGS: Bone loss during weight loss likely reflects multiple interacting mechanisms, including alterations in endocrine signaling, impaired calcium absorption, reduced mechanical loading, and alterations in the gut microbiota. The extent of bone loss is further influenced by age, sex, initial body weight, nutrient intake, and method of weight loss, with greater loss in older and lean adults, and after severe caloric restriction, such as with incretin mimetics or bariatric surgery. Current evidence emphasizes the importance of adequate nutrient intake (e.g., calcium, protein, etc.) and exercise as countermeasures to attenuate bone loss. Emerging evidence also suggests that additional countermeasures, including osteoporosis medications and other lifestyle interventions, may affect weight-loss-induced bone loss, and randomized trials are needed. Weight-loss-induced bone loss is multifactorial, involving endocrine, metabolic, nutritional, mechanical, and gut microbiota-mediated mechanisms that remain incompletely understood. These mechanisms influencing skeletal responses to weight loss can inform targeted strategies to preserve bone health and reduce fracture risk during obesity management.

Choosing Not to Eat Meat: What Characterizes Independently Vegetarian Children?

A growing body of research has aimed to map the characteristics of extraordinary altruists-such as those who have donated a kidney to a stranger. However, this research has primarily focused on adults, and we know little about the development of extraordinary altruism. While children cannot donate their organs to strangers nor large portions of their income to charity, they can choose not to eat animals. In this study we examine indepe…

Essential Oral Single Nutritional Therapy Products for Inherited Metabolic Diseases: Evidence and Consensus Assessment Using a Modified Delphi Method.

Nutritional therapy is critical in managing inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs), and includes specialized diets and single nutritional therapy products (sNTPs) such as vitamins, cofactors, and amino acids. Many sNTPs function as medicines, but are regulated as food (e.g., food supplements), which can limit access, reimbursement, and consistent supply. Essential medicines, as defined by World Health Organization (WHO), meet key healthca…

Feeding a low-protein diet exacerbates the susceptibility to Citrobacter rodentium and dextran sulfate sodium-induced intestinal injury in mice.

Globally, almost half of all early childhood deaths are linked to severe undernutrition, herein referred to as severe malnutrition. Mortality in severely malnourished children is often attributed to common infectious diseases, including enteric infections. It has been proposed that impaired intestinal barrier function contributes to mortality, but direct evidence is limited and thus there exists a need to develop improved preclinical m…

Higher adherence to a Nordic diet is associated with reduced risk of mild depressive symptoms: a population-based analysis.

PURPOSE: Although the Mediterranean diet has been widely studied in relation to depression, less is known about the associations between other diets, such as the Nordic Diet, and depressive symptoms and clinical depression. The aim was to examine whether adherence to a Nordic diet (assessed with the modified Nordic Diet Index, mNDI) is associated with depressive symptoms and clinical depression in the Finnish Health 2000-2011 survey.
