BACKGROUND: Family caregivers of older adults with cognitive impairment often experience significant emotional, physical, and psychological burden. Although primary care plays a crucial role in early identification, caregiver burden frequently goes unrecognized due to time constraints, lack of standardized protocols, and limited provider awareness. METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar to identify studies published between 2013 and 2023 on the topic of assessing for caregiver burden in primary care. RESULTS: Nine studies focusing on the use of validated caregiver burden screening tools in primary care settings met the inclusion criteria. Validated tools for formal screening for caregiver burden were identified. Informal assessments were more commonly used despite their limitations. Barriers to formal screening included time constraints, lack of training, limited reimbursement, and caregiver reluctance. When formal tools were used, caregivers felt validated and were more frequently referred to supportive services. CONCLUSION: Routine use of validated screening tools in primary care can improve early detection of caregiver burden, enhance communication, and support family-centered care.
