چکیده اصلی

BACKGROUND: Early development of core competencies is essential in medical education, yet traditional medical curricula often struggle to bridge the gap between biomedical knowledge and humanistic application. Drawing on social constructivism, this study examines an integrated Narrative Medicine (NM) and Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) model designed to facilitate the transition from foundational knowledge to contextualized professional application. METHODS: An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was employed. A 19-indicator Knowledge-Skills-Attitude (KSA) scale was developed via a Delphi process and evaluated for preliminary psychometric properties. Following a 10-month intervention with 128 first-year students (Experimental n = 64; Control n = 64), hybrid thematic analysis of 14 in-depth interviews explored the underlying pedagogical mechanisms. RESULTS: The experimental group reported significantly higher self-reported core competency scores than the control group (77.42 ± 7.45 vs. 68.00 ± 7.31; p < 0.001; Cohen's d = 1.28). At the item level, critical thinking and empathy-driven awareness did not reach statistical significance. Qualitative findings suggested that participants perceived narrative features of the integrated package as a catalyst for meaning-making, while peer-assisted elements were viewed as providing social scaffolding necessary for skill development. CONCLUSION: This exploratory study provides preliminary evidence that the integrated NM-PAL model may support students' self-reported development of contextualized clinical competence and early professional identity. By providing a low-pressure collaborative environment, the model may support early reflective engagement that could be foundational to professional development, warranting further longitudinal and confirmatory research.

Association between experience quality in a short-term, voluntary, rural, funded, immersion placement program on future rural engagement decisions.

BACKGROUND: Rural immersion programs are commonly used to expose medical students to rural practice using curriculum-embedded placements. However, evidence regarding short-term, funded, voluntary, rural immersion placements that are not part of standard curricula-based training and their association with continued rural workforce engagement remains limited. Participants of the Bush Bursary, a voluntary, scholarship-based rural immersio…

Student and surgeon perceptions of a robotic theatre live-link within the undergraduate curriculum.

Explore student and surgeon perceptions of robotic theatre live-links as part of an undergraduate medical degree programme. During the surgical block, in the fourth year of a five-year medical programme at the University of Dundee, a robotic live-link session was introduced. Students undertook a pre-session case discussion and targeted anatomy revision before linking in to view the live operation. During the live-link session, the oper…

Dependability of Entrustable Professional Activity Portfolios in Otorhinolaryngology Residency: Nationwide Generalizability and Decision Study.

BACKGROUND: Competency-based medical education increasingly uses digital workplace assessment platforms to collect longitudinal evidence of trainees' readiness for progressive responsibility. Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) translate competencies into observable clinical work, but individual workplace observations are context-dependent and may not support dependable progression decisions. Empirical guidance remains limited o…

Research Participation During a National Educational Disruption: Insights From a Natural Experiment in Medical Education.

BACKGROUND: Immersive research experiences are widely recognized as valuable for medical students. However, opportunities for extended research are often constrained by dense curricula. In 2024, the Republic of Korea experienced an inevitable nationwide suspension of medical education for about one year, allowing some students to engage in full-time research. From this unique situation, the present study aimed to explore the medical st…
