چکیده اصلی

Soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC) is an essential indicator of microbial activity and soil health, reflecting ecosystem functioning and sustainability. We synthesized data from 221 peer-reviewed studies from 1988 to 2024 to evaluate the global effects of six sustainable land management (SLM) practices-organic amendment, inorganic fertilization, integrated fertilization, conservation tillage, crop diversification, and crop residue management-on SMBC in global croplands. Except for inorganic fertilization, which had a slight negative effect, all practices were associated with higher SMBC concentration values, with treatment plots exhibiting, on average, 23.5% higher SMBC concentration than control plots across the compiled global database. The degree of these effects varied on the basis of environmental factors, especially aridity and soil texture. Based on the compiled dataset and extrapolation approach, SLM practices were associated with an estimated 27% increase in global SMBC stocks, corresponding to approximately 322 million tonnes of microbial carbon across global croplands although this estimate should be interpreted with caution due to spatial heterogeneity in data coverage and uncertainties associated with generalized assumptions in bulk density and soil depth. Integrated fertilization and crop diversification were particularly effective across all aridity classes. Subgroup analyses confirmed that soil texture, aridity, and management practices each significantly affected SMBC. However, we observed notable combined effects on SMBC only when two environmental factors changed at the same time. This suggests that although SLM practices may help to reduce the harms of single stressors, the combined effects of multiple stressors can greatly change microbial carbon dynamics. These findings highlight the importance of developing context-specific SLM strategies to enhance microbial carbon pools and improve soil health, thereby providing guidance for land managers, policymakers, and farmers to promote more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems worldwide.

Beyond Bactericidal: Plasma Surface Engineering to Defeat Food Matrix-Conditioning Layers.

The persistence of foodborne pathogens on industrial food contact surfaces continues to challenge global food safety despite advances in sanitation technologies. A central limitation of current antimicrobial strategies lies in their validation under simplified laboratory conditions that overlook the physicochemically driven formation of food matrix conditioning films. Upon contact with food residues, organic macromolecules reorganize a…

Microbial Surveillance of Commonly Encountered Clinical Surfaces Within a Veterinary Ophthalmology Service.

OBJECTIVE: To establish surveillance of organisms found on high-touch clinical surfaces within a veterinary teaching hospital ophthalmology service and record trends that may foster additional studies investigating links between environmental microbiota and pathogenic bacteria affecting the ocular surface. PROCEDURES: Samples from 17 high touch surfaces in the ophthalmology department of a veterinary teaching hospital were collected ov…

Molecular Characterisation and Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns of Listeria monocytogenes From Dairy Sources.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) is a major food pathogen that causes severe infections, especially in the susceptible population. Dairy products and milk are some of the possible vehicles through which it can be transmitted both as a threat to the health of people and as an economic issue. The study conducted was to explore the prevalence, virulence characteristics, and antimicrobial resistance patterns …

Diverse microplastics reprogram rhizosphere processes and constrain photosynthetic performance in barley through coordinated changes in oxidative regulation, nutrient cycling, enzyme hotspots, and microbial organization.

This study examined short-term responses of barley to polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride microplastics in a controlled 60-day greenhouse rhizobox experiment with three replicates per treatment. Microplastics were applied at 0, 2, and 4% of dry soil mass, corresponding to high experimental loadings of 20,000 and 40,000 mg kg-1, respectively. Bulk and rhizosphere soils were evaluated separately using enzyme zymography, nutrient analysis…
