Environmental functional microorganisms play a key role in environmental engineering processes such as pollutant degradation, wastewater treatment, and resource utilization. Conventional enrichment and directed domestication technologies often have limitations such as long operational cycles and low throughput, being difficult to meet the demands for rapid screening, enhancement, and engineering application of functional microorganisms under complex environmental conditions. In recent years, advances in continuous cultivation, high-throughput cultivation, microfluidic chips, intelligent bioreactors, and automated adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) have provided new approaches for the precise screening, targeted enhancement, and feedback-based process control of environmental functional microorganisms. This review systematically summarizes the basic principles and key platforms of automated enrichment and directed domestication technologies, as well as their application progress in the development of microorganisms for petroleum hydrocarbon and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degradation, wastewater denitrification, heavy metal tolerance, and emerging contaminant degradation. In addition, by integrating our research group's work on targeted environmental microorganism isolation devices, programmable logic controller (PLC)-driven ALE systems, and the screening of functional strains for halogenated organic pollutant degradation, this review analyzes the current limitations of these technologies in in situ simulation, maintenance of mixed microbial community interactions, screening of non-growth-coupled phenotypes, and engineering scale-up. Finally, future directions are proposed for the application of automated enrichment and directed acclimation technologies in the exploration, functional enhancement, and engineering application of environmental functional microbial resources. This review is expected to provide theoretical and methodological support for improving the technological framework of environmental functional microorganism development and facilitating its translation into engineering practice.

Beyond Bactericidal: Plasma Surface Engineering to Defeat Food Matrix-Conditioning Layers.

The persistence of foodborne pathogens on industrial food contact surfaces continues to challenge global food safety despite advances in sanitation technologies. A central limitation of current antimicrobial strategies lies in their validation under simplified laboratory conditions that overlook the physicochemically driven formation of food matrix conditioning films. Upon contact with food residues, organic macromolecules reorganize a…

Microbial Surveillance of Commonly Encountered Clinical Surfaces Within a Veterinary Ophthalmology Service.

OBJECTIVE: To establish surveillance of organisms found on high-touch clinical surfaces within a veterinary teaching hospital ophthalmology service and record trends that may foster additional studies investigating links between environmental microbiota and pathogenic bacteria affecting the ocular surface. PROCEDURES: Samples from 17 high touch surfaces in the ophthalmology department of a veterinary teaching hospital were collected ov…

Molecular Characterisation and Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns of Listeria monocytogenes From Dairy Sources.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) is a major food pathogen that causes severe infections, especially in the susceptible population. Dairy products and milk are some of the possible vehicles through which it can be transmitted both as a threat to the health of people and as an economic issue. The study conducted was to explore the prevalence, virulence characteristics, and antimicrobial resistance patterns …

Diverse microplastics reprogram rhizosphere processes and constrain photosynthetic performance in barley through coordinated changes in oxidative regulation, nutrient cycling, enzyme hotspots, and microbial organization.

This study examined short-term responses of barley to polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride microplastics in a controlled 60-day greenhouse rhizobox experiment with three replicates per treatment. Microplastics were applied at 0, 2, and 4% of dry soil mass, corresponding to high experimental loadings of 20,000 and 40,000 mg kg-1, respectively. Bulk and rhizosphere soils were evaluated separately using enzyme zymography, nutrient analysis…
